DIET
While with us, your puppy will be raised on a balanced all natural diet established with veterinary advice. We always prefer that this in continued once your new puppy is home with you, but also realize that sometimes this isn't possible. In the case that you would like to feed a dry kibble food as the base for your new puppies diet, we have taken the time to research and scrutinize for you, the ones we feel are appropriate and best for your new puppy to thrive on. Although a cheaper food may seem like a good idea, it often isn't the best option. Most supermarket dry foods and even some premium foods are crammed with fillers, grains and sugar that is a lot like us eating McDonalds or fruit loops at every meal, it does the job and fills you up, but down the line you are going to see negative impacts on your general health and wellbeing. Please take the time to consider the best options for your puppy's long term health. As well as dry food, you should also be feeding fresh meat mixed into your pups kibble at every meal, appropriate puréed fresh fruit and veggies are also a bonus to your dogs health. Fresh bones including chicken pieces, lamb necks as well as brisket bones should be offered multiple times through the week for dental health and general wellbeing. We do not reccomend canned food in general and should only be fed as a last resort. This is only a generalized and brief overview of diet, and a extended and detailed guide will be provided in your puppy pack.
TRAINING, SPORT, CONFORMATION AND JOINING YOUR STATE CONTROLLING BODY (ANKC)
For information regarding joining your state controlling body to compete in obedience, agility, herding, conformation shows or the host of other sporting opportunities, please contact us and we can point you in the right direction with the appropriate information.
We reccomend all our puppies should at the very least attend puppy school, and ideally basic obedience classes not only for the obvious benefits of making them well behaved canine citizens, but also to continue the controlled and safe socialization with people and other dogs that we have started here for you.
GROOMING
We all loved a freshly washed pooch! To keep your pup in tip top shape we recommend at least monthly grooming. Whether you pass this job to a professional groomer or DIY, it is your responsibility to make sure it is done appropriately. The more you get your puppy used to grooming when they are young, the easier it will be for them and you as they grow older. Even though this is something we would have already started with pup before he heads to his forever home, you should ideally continue this as soon as you get them home with a fortnightly bath, brush and nails session. They are not too young and washing frequently will not do any damage to you babies skin or coat if you are using a good quality, PH balanced, sulfate free shampoo. We never recccomend you shave your White Swiss. Ever. There is absolutely no need unless due to a dramatic medical condition. It can be very tempting to some to think that shaving there dog short in summer will help them stay cool in our harsh Australian heat.... When it actually has the complete opposite effect. Shaving your dogs double coat (natures insulation system!) means that your dog can no longer self regulate there body temperature, and are therefor prone to heatstroke etc. and can also lead to sunburn and skin cancer and so on and so forth. Your dogs heavy coat actually does help them stay cool, as long as you keep your furry friend well brushed and groomed and free of any dead hair. A standard groom for your White Swiss should include:
- a shampoo and condition
- a blow dry
- thorough brushing and de-shed if required
- nails trimmed
- ears cleaned
